Appetite Stimulation and Medicinal Cannabis

There are many conditions that include a low or under-stimulated appetite as a symptom, which can lead to serious complications with treatment depending on the illness.

Appetite refers to the desire to consume food/energy. When your appetite is working properly, you consume enough food to keep the body running in peak condition - fuelling your day to day activities. Some people have fast metabolisms, which means their body consumes energy at a faster rate, meaning they usually need to consume more food to keep the body in check.

Appetite stimulants are used when the body's appetite for food slows to the point where you aren't consuming enough nutrition to keep your body healthy.

Why do people need appetite stimulants?

Some reasons that people may need an appetite stimulant include:

  • Psychological disorders, such as stress, depression, and anxiety
  • Cancer
  • Gastrointestinal disorders, such as peptic ulcer disease, gerd, and ulcerative colitis
  • Chronic diseases, such as copd, cystic fibrosis, and parkinson’s disease
  • Some chronic infections, such as hiv
  • Medications, such as chemotherapy, laxatives, and amphetamines
  • Increasing age and slowed metabolism
  • Decrease in activity level
  • Hormonal changes

How can medicinal cannabis help with Appetite Stimulation?

Cannabis, specifically the sativa strain, has been used to stimulate appetite for centuries with users reporting having a strong desire to eat after consumption. Science has confirmed that the reason behind cannabis stimulating appetite comes from where cannabinoid receptors are housed in the brain, which mimic the endocannabinoids in control of appetite.

Medicinal cannabis has great potential to treat eating disorders that require both appetite suppression and appetite stimulation when the right cannabinoid isolate is used.

Generally for appetite stimulation, products that have a higher concentration of THC are recommended, and CBD isolates are not. Some potential products that can help stimulate appetite include:

  • Nabiximols
  • Dronbinol
  • THC extracts
  • Cannabis Sativa

They can be consumed as an oil, vape liquid, sprays and wafers.
